Understanding Window Recess Measurement

A window recess is an indentation or space within the window frame where the window itself is set. It's important to accurately measure this space for proper window treatment installations, like plantation shutters.

Measuring the Recess without Obstructions

To measure a clear window recess:

  1. Start at the Shallowest Point: Measure from the shallowest point inside the window recess to the front edge of the wall.

Measuring the Recess with Obstructions

When obstructions are present:

  1. Measure from the Window to the Obstruction: Take the distance from the window glass to the front of any obstruction, such as handles or locks.
  2. Measure from the Window to the Front of the Recess: Then measure from the window glass to the front edge of the recess.
  3. Calculate the Difference: Subtract the smaller measurement from the larger one to determine the depth available for your window treatment.

Remember to:

  • Allow Access Space: If measuring around items like window winders, leave enough clearance to ensure usability.
  • Measure Multiple Times: Check the measurements in several places to confirm accuracy.

Additional Considerations for Recess Depth

  • If your recess is unobstructed and at least 70mm deep, you can opt for an inside mount for your shutters.
  • Be mindful of fly screens and windows that open inward, as inside-mounted shutters could restrict access to these features.
  • In some cases, it may be feasible to inside mount shutters even if the recess is less than 70mm. For comprehensive guidance on managing obstructions, please refer to our in-depth article on the subject.
