Installation Guide: Outside Mount Plantation Shutters

Preparation

Ensure you have all the necessary tools before beginning:

  • Cordless drill (recommended for ease)
  • Phillips head screwdriver bit
  • Knife (for opening packaging)
  • Level
  • Step ladder (if the window is beyond easy reach)

Organising Your Shutters

Choose an open area close to the window for unpacking and assembling your shutters. They usually come in two separate boxes, one containing the frame and the other holding up to two shutter panels.

Identify the red tape on your boxes, which signifies where the hardware is packed. Open the boxes carefully with your knife, making sure not to damage the contents.

Arrange the frame pieces on the floor to match their position on the window.

Remove the cover strips from the frame before starting the assembly; these will be reattached later.

Assembly

Slot the corners of the frame pieces together, ensuring they are flush. Install a T post if your shutter design includes one, labeled with "B" for bottom, if so.

With the frame assembled, position it against the window. You may require assistance to hold the frame while you attach the top of the frame using the pre-drilled holes. Place one screw to hold the frame, then use the level to ensure it's straight before adding the second screw. Do not fully tighten these screws at this point.

Installing the Shutters

Attach the shutter panels, which come with pre-attached hinges, to the matching hinges on the frame. Start from the left and move to the right, dropping in hinge pins to secure the panels.

Before securing the rest of the frame, adjust the shutter panels for alignment.

Pro tip: While the panels are rigid, the frame can be flexed slightly before it is fully secured to ensure the shutters are perfectly square.

Fine Tuning

For precise adjustments, you may need to slightly move the panels up or down by loosening the hinge screws, adjusting, and then tightening the locking screw.

Hinge packers can be used for minor adjustments. Loosen the screws on the panel, insert the packers behind the hinge, then retighten.

Finishing

Reinsert the cover strips to complete the installation.

Congratulations!

Your outside mount plantation shutters are now expertly installed and ready for use!
