Installation of Shutters on Brick Walls

Installing shutters on brick is straightforward. While you can adhere to the standard installation guide, you must take a few additional steps to accommodate the brick surface.

Extra Steps for Brick Installation

Before attaching the shutter frame to the brick wall, you must drill holes using a masonry drill bit and insert wall plugs. Ensure that the drill bit and wall plugs are compatible with the screws provided with your shutters. Typically, the drilled hole should be slightly larger than the width of the wall plug. Since brick is a dense material, a powerful large drill is necessary. If you don't own one, consider renting.

Preparation

Here's what you'll need:

• Cordless drill
• Masonry drill bit (matched to the wall plug and screw size)
• Wall plugs
• Phillips head screwdriver
• Stanley Knife
• Level
• Step ladder (if required)

Organising Your Shutters

Choose a clear area on the floor to unpack and assemble your shutters, preferably near the window. Typically, shutters will arrive in two boxes—one with the frame and another with the shutter panels.

Identify the red tape on your boxes, indicating where the hardware is packed. Use a knife to carefully open the box along the tape and remove the components.

Arrange the frame pieces on the floor to reflect their placement on the window. You'll need to attach the bottom frame piece if using a Z frame with a sill. For certain shutter designs, a T post marked with "B" at the bottom might be necessary.

Inserting Your Frame

After assembling your frame, position it in the window. Mark the location for pilot holes using the pre-drilled holes in your frame as a guide. You may use a thin pencil or the drill itself for marking.

Remove the frame and drill the holes with the masonry bit to the required depth for the wall plugs, then insert the plugs.

Securing Your Frame

Fix the frame temporarily by screwing in the top corners without fully tightening the screws.

Hang your shutters by aligning the pre-attached hinges on the panels with the hinges on the frame, and secure them with hinge pins.

Adjust the panels to ensure they are aligned, and slightly flex the frame for a perfect square fit.

Make any final adjustments, then securely fasten the frame by tightening all screws through the predrilled holes. To adjust the height of a panel, loosen the hinge screws, make the adjustment, and then tighten the locking screw.

For finer adjustments, use hinge packers by loosening the panel screws and placing them behind the hinge.

Insert screw caps for a neat finish.

For an L frame, you might want to apply a filler to any gaps for a professional appearance.
